Clark Level and Breslow Depth

Postby gerrymac » Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:59 am

I have just been diagnosed and awaiting a wide excision. I have confirmed that my melanoma is Clark level 4 and Breslow depth 0.6mm. I have done some research on the internet (think I'll be giving that up, it's scary) and seen information that suggests that in thin melanomas like mine the Clark level is a better indicator of prognosis. My question is will the dermatologist carry out a sentinel node biopsy because of the Clark level or should I ask him to do this to be on the safe side.

Hi Gerry

My MM was breslow 1mm with Clark level 4

Clark level doesn't mean a thing. Only Breslow counts.

They only use this for stage 1 melanomas not sure why?

Someone will be along to answer in more depth than I can

Regards
Chris

Hi Gerry,

Chris is right, though the very newest guidelines do give a second consideration for thin MM, but it is mitotic rate, not Clark level. More info.
