When my wife had her second lump removed the surgeon mentioned radiotherapy, but the experts at the regional cancer centre said it was not an option. I think the idea was to remove any satellites, or odd cancer cells which were not captured in the wider excision.
Now my wife is in the terminal stages , we are told radiotherapy is not an option as the lymph nodes are on her aorta, and radiotherapy to that area would wreak havoc with her digestive tract.
The best thing if you have questions is to ask. When my wife was told that no further treatment was possible, we were both in shock, so I made an appointment to go on my own to see the consultant, and asked many more questions. The consultant was very open, but the real answer was that they don't really know how the condition will proress.
I find it amazing that so many people are dying from melanoma, and yet no patterns are emerging.
